Which Type of Sedation Dentistry is Right for You?

Experts at Simaya Prosthodontics offer multiple types of sedation so you can choose the level that’s right for you.

Oral Sedation Dentistry

Also known as oral conscious sedation, this type of sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment. It makes the patient feel deeply relaxed, and drowsy, but conscious enough to respond if needed. Be sure to rest after the treatment, and you’ll need someone to drive you home.

IV Sedation Dentistry

IV sedation dentistry is used for a much deeper level of relaxation. IV sedation is directly administered into the bloodstream, making it ideal for longer treatments or patients with severe dental anxiety. Most patients have little to no memory of the visit afterward.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

This mild form of dental sedation is inhaled through a mask and wears off quickly after your procedure. It provides just enough relaxation for patients with minimal anxiety or for shorter dental treatments.

My 12 year old daughter and I became new clients yesterday. We were there for our 6 month check ups and stays. The office is modern and clean. The staff was friendly and informative. We were seen by the dentist fairly quick. She was nice. Also, Tabatha answered the phones professionally as well as returned my calls to answer questions twice. Heather was our hygienist. She was very engaging and thorough throughout the process. She explained to my child everything she was doing or going to do. She made us feel comfortable and made great recommendations for future care of our teeth. Thanks again. See ya in October!

FAQs

1. What are the 4 levels of sedation?
The sedation is generally divided into four levels:
  • Minimal sedation: relaxed but fully awake
  • Moderate sedation: drowsy, may slur words
  • Deep sedation: on the edge of consciousness
  • General anesthesia: completely unconscious
Depending on the type of dental sedation you’re taking, it can last from 1 to 6 hours. Oral sedation and IV sedation effects may linger slightly longer.
The insurance coverage for sedation depends on your treatment, as routine care may rarely cover it. However, it may be included for surgeries or patients with medical necessity.
Intravenous sedation typically involves medications like midazolam or propofol, which show results instantly and allow the dentist to control sedation levels throughout the procedure.
Sedation is used for fearful patients to reduce anxiety and pain sensitivity. You may still feel mild sensations, but discomfort is minimal.
Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before treatment. It keeps you awake but deeply relaxed, making procedures easier and stress-free.
